instant pot

Deal #1 – Instant Pot, 7-in-1 Multifunctional Pressure Cooker $119.95 $68.95

If you missed the Instant Pot sale on Prime Day in July – great news, it’s back! 215,000 people nabbed an Instant Pot that day, including me, and now is your chance to get in on the action.

Did you guys see my post on how life-changing these things can be for dinner time?!

SO MANY of you have written to me asking how to get dinner on the table faster, so you can spend more time with your kids after school and work.

This is a great start my friends! We’ve been blown away by home much quicker and easier it’s made dinner. And the meat and chicken, especially, are so much juicier and more flavorful than those made in a regular crockpot!

Looks like it’s limit 1 per customer again, get it while you can!

Deal #2 – Fire Kids’ Edition Tablet $99.99 $74.99

We have always been very mindful about the kinds of screen time we allow our kids at home. Last summer we decided we wanted to buy them each a small tablet for the long road trips we had planned.

After a lot of research, we decided to buy our 5- and 7-year-olds their own Kindle Fires Kids’ Edition Tablets.

Our choice came down to a few key things:

  1. It comes with 1 year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, an essential kid-proof case, plus a 2-year worry-free guarantee – if they break it, Amazon will replace it. No questions asked!
  2. The parental controls are amazing. I have so much flexibility on what my kids can do (only ebooks, only apps, only TV shows or a combination of any of them), as well as what time they can do them or how long they can do them for.
  3. That FreeTime Unlimited subscription comes with ebooks, apps, and kids shows are great quality and there are A LOT to choose from. This means my kids are never bored and, again, I can block any of them that I don’t feel are appropriate.
  4. It’s an open system that is compatible to 3rd party apps. That means I can download things like Angry Birds, Minecraft, or LightBot (a free app that teaches kids to code and is one of my kids’ current favorites).
  5. It comes with all the benefits of the Kindle e-Readers (see below)

or

All-New Fire HD 8 Tablet, 8″ HD Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB $89.99 $59.99

That’s what I love about the Kids’ Edition, the all-new Fire HD 8 Tablet has all of the same features plus Alexa cloud-based voice service – just press and ask.

If you want this latest version, you can add on the kids’ case and 2-year-warranty.

Also, don’t miss…

Keyboard Case for All-New Amazon Fire HD 8 (2016 6th Generation) $89.95 $32.99

This is a great deal for turning you kids’ tablet into their own full-blown computer.

This is great because they need to start learning typing skills at a very young age and they need a keyboard to do that! (My son has been logging hours every week on his favorite typing game this summer.)

Why I LOVE Kindles for kids:

    1) The “Word Wise” Feature will Build Their Reading Skills

Particularly for young readers, Word Wise makes it easier to enjoy and quickly understand more challenging books. This is perfect for my 2nd grader! As much as he loves to read, I know he’s simply skipping over words he doesn’t understand... this genius feature will teach him the words as he goes, without interrupting his reading!

How it works: Short and simple definitions, as well as synonyms, automatically appear above difficult words, so he can keep reading with fewer interruptions.

Furthermore, words looked up in the dictionary are automatically turned into flash cards and added to his “Vocabulary Builder”.

So when he’s done reading, he can swipe through his vocabulary words, quiz himself with flashcards, and instantly see those words in context.

    2) You Can Burrow Titles for Free from Your Library

Many libraries, including ours, allow members to checkout and automatically download titles right onto their kindles. (You can also read these books and all other kindle books on your computer, phone, etc. using the free kindle reading app so you can switch devices whenever you want.)

So handy for getting in lots of summer reading- especially during long road trips!

    3) They Tell You How Long It’ll Take Your Child to Finish that Chapter

My kids are always asking to just finish one more chapter when I tell them they need to put the book away and go to sleep.

So I love the handy Time to Read feature that tracks their reading speed and always displays how long it will take my son or daughter to finish the current chapter.

It helps me determine if there really is time to finish that chapter. So smart!!

    4) It Stays Charged for Weeks

So nice that I don’t have to keep after my kids to keep them charged!

LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack $59.99 $39.99 for Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii U (6 years and up)

Note: You need a Prime membership to get the Xbox One price- sign up for a free 30-day trial here!

Deciding when to let your kids start to play video games is a very personal parenting decision. When you do take the plunge, though, this is a fantastic way to start. LEGO Dimensions is a kid-friendly video game that encourages creativity as well as game play by incorporating LEGO building into the process. I love that! I also love that one of the three characters in the starter pack is a girl, Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie.

Once kids have the starter pack, they put together the three minifigures (Batman, Wyldstyle and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings), then the game guides them on how to use the LEGOs included to build the “LEGO gateway” on top of the toy pad. Once that is done, kids can place the 3 included figurines and batmobile onto the gateway and they’ll actually show up in the game. So cool!

After that, there are all kinds of expansion packs kids can buy, build, and add into the game to create something completely unique like Harry Potter, Ghost Busters, and Batman all playing side by side.

As video games go, this one is incredibly hands on and creative and I love that the price of the expansion packs makes them the perfect thing for kids to do chores and save up for! We are taking the plunge and getting this and the Xbox One S Minecraft Bundle for our 8-year-old this Christmas (and I’m sure the 6-year-old will get in on some of the fun too.)

Da Vinci MiniMaker 3D printer $227.62 $199.97 (7 years and up)

Ever since hearing Wired editor and bestselling author, Chris Anderson, speak on the new industrial revolution that’s under way and what it’s going to take to raise the next generation of innovators, I’ve had the idea of buying my kids a 3D printer percolating in the back of my head.

Despite the purchase being a significant investment at the time, Anderson quite convincingly argued that buying our children a 3D printer is tantamount to our own parents buying us our first computer. Why? Because with this one device anything our kids can imagine, they can literally create. That is a very powerful message to send our kids! Anderson effectively convinced me that this thing could open up a whole new world of innovation and possibilities for my children.

So when I saw that there’s a new, kid-friendly 3D printer on the market at a much more approachable price, I was more than a little intrigued. And when XYZ Printing offered me the chance to review it, I jumped at the chance and we gave it to our second grader for his 8th birthday.

The first thing that jumped out at me about this printer was the bright primary colors, making it immediately seem kid-friendly and approachable, and it’s nicely compact size. I really appreciate that I can easily keep it on our office desk but we still get a spacious build platform 5.9 inches.

The next thing was that as a true beginner’s 3D printer, the manufacturer offers a lot of features to ensure success. This includes comprehensive videos on how to set up and use the printer as well as a lot of design resources including the 3D Design Software, the XYZ 3D Gallery, and even an entire STEAM 3D Printing Education Curriculum.

Sphero Star Wars BB-8 App Controlled Robot $149.95 $99.99

With the massive resurgence of Star Wars this year, I just couldn’t leave it off the list- but which toy to chose? This is the actual robot from the movie in real life and controlled by a smart phone. So cool!

Anki Overdrive Starter Kit $149.99 $119.99

If your kids like hot wheels, they are going to lose their minds over this next generation high-tech racing toy. Players use smart phones to steer the cars on the extra large track which can be constructed into 8 different “battle fields”.

That’s all great, but here’s what’s ridiculously cool… The A.I. cars actually race on their own, meaning your kids can race against them and don’t need a friend to play with!

You can also upgrade later on with track extensions, new cars and the new supertrucks.

From the manufacturer, “Open the box and build your battle track. The Anki OVERDRIVE app automatically handles everything else, from getting you connected, to teaching you gameplay, so you can start playing immediately. It’s effortless by design… Duel friends or artificially intelligent opponents. 25+ different A.I. personalities know your every move and make split-second tactical decisions based on their environment and objectives. The more you play, the more upgrades and items you gain, and the better you fight back… These aren’t just cars. They’re robots programmed for battle. Control them with your smart device and take down opponents with an array of weapons, from plasma cannons to flame throwers. It’s pulse-pounding play, made possible through state-of-the-art tech and it’s an experience unlike anything else.”

SmartLab Toys Secret Formula Lab $39.99 $31.33 (8+ years)

This is the science kit you always wanted as a kit, but didn’t really exist- a kid-friendly chemistry set that actually looks legit. The big fun here is in the apparatus. The beakers and test tubes are connected to each other via tubes and a plunger that make it possible to pump chemicals from one to the next and create lots of cool concoctions. Check out the video to see how it works.

I’m seriously considering this one as for my 8-year-old this year as I know it’s something he’ll have a lot of fun with on his own or with me. I also love that the kit comes with the chemicals required for the “40 epic experiments” and only requires the addition of basic kitchen ingredients, so we can play with it right out of the box.

This one looks like the rare STEM toy that will get kids excited about science in a way that involves something other than programming and technology. That gets a big gold star from me!

Educational Insights Design & Drill BrightWorks $26.54 (3 – 8 years)

I particularly like how this toy combines fine motor skills with pattern recognition AND adds a great dramatic play element. We got it for our son when he was 4 and he played with it quite a bit until his little old sister took it over. Now our 1 1/2 year old is starting to get in on the fun (mostly sorting and manipulating the pieces with his hands for now but I anticipate him picking up the drill pretty soon).

The popularity of this toy has also led to some cool variations, including the Design & Drill Flower Power Station and, my favorite, this Design & Drill BrightWorks– which is like if the original Design & Drill had a baby with the classic Lite Brite from my childhood (in other words, the pieces light up and it’s totally awesome).

Klutz LEGO Chain Reactions Craft Kit $15.70 $12.75 (7 – 15 years)

The first thing I thought when I saw this book was that it was a combo of two of my son’s favorite things: LEGOs and the game Mouse Trap. I talk a lot in this gift guide about the value of open-ended toys and I think this book could really get a kid’s mind spinning in regards to what new contraptions they can invent… From the manufacturer, “LEGO Chain Reactions is packed full of ideas, instructions, and inspiration for 10 LEGO machines that spin, swing, pivot, roll, lift, and drop.

Each machine alone is awesome, but put them together and you get incredible chain reactions. Then, combine the machines in any order you like to create your ownchain reactions. Our team of experts worked with educators and 11-year-olds to invent the machines, then wrote a book that teaches the skills (and some of the physics behind the fun) kids need to create their own amazing chain reaction machines.”

The kit comes with 78 page book, 33 LEGO elements, 6 LEGO balls, 6 feet of string, 8 paper ramps, 2 paper pop-up signs, 1 paper funnel ramp, 1 paper flag, 1 paper bucket, 1 platform and the makers assure that you don’t need to worry that you won’t have the right bricks as they made sure you’ll need only the most common bricks, and that there are plenty of substitutes… And while we’re on the topic of LEGO build books, The LEGO Ideas Book and LEGO Play Book are also well worth looking into.

MegaBloks American Girl Building Sets Up to 40% off (4 – 12 years)

I’m so impressed with this line of LEGO-like building sets for girls. First of all, it’s American Girl brand, so that’s guaranteed to attract a lot of girls, even those who don’t gravitate towards building. Second, each set has a lot to it for girls to not only build, but also use as props during imaginary play- something girls are known to love to engage in.

There are a large variety of sets to choose from. My favorites on sale today include:

LEGO Minecraft The Jungle Tree House 30% Off! – $69.99 $48.99

I admit, Minecraft is something that we’re just entering into with my first grader son, so I’m by no means an expert (yet). But I have certainly heard of Minecraft for years now and how incredibly popular and addictive it can be amongst kids (and adults) of a certain age.

Bringing it into the 3D world with these highly-rated LEGO sets is a no-brainer- especially if you’re looking for non-screen activities for your video game-obsessed kids!

KidKraft Ride Around Train Set and Table $136.95 $109.95 (18 months – 8 years)

We bought our son a train table for his 2nd birthday and we always say it’s one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. For over four years both he and his sister played with it several times a week.  And now his 18 month old brother is really starting to get into it.

At 4 years old our oldest was able to completely construct the track by himself using the map and that added a whole new level of building play to this fantastic toy. I think the model we bought has been discontinued but this one is the same brand and has all of the same key components: a bridge, waterfall mountain, helicopter landing pad, and the all-important drawers for storing all the little pieces.

If you’re going to be putting your train table in main living space, you may want to spring for the more expensive KidKraft Metropolis Train Set Table with Trundle Drawer.  It’s got a nicer “furniture” look (and that double-decker bridge is pretty cool too). Also, over the years we’ve amassed quite a collection of Thomas trains to go with this table.

Fisher-Price Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo $34.73 $23.99 (9 months – 3 years)

This is the hottest new baby toy of the year and it’s not too hard to see why. The happy look and bright colors of this little guy will be enticing to any young child and his light up tricks, songs, phrases and dance moves are sure to get them moving and giggling too. There’s even a freeze dance function that will help bigger kids burn off some energy.

From the manufacturer, “A press of BeatBo’s tummy or any of the buttons on his feet activates fun songs, learning content and dance moves. This futuristic friend even allows mommy or baby to record a phrase, and he’ll remix it into his favorite song! His three modes – Dance ‘n Move, Learning & Games, and Customized Sing-Along – “grow” with baby to make him a fun, entertaining companion for years to come! And all the while, he’s introducing baby to letters, colors, counting, music, cause & effect and more.

One reviewer wrote, “A very versatile toy for a broad range of age groups. You could put it in front of a baby that has the ability to sit up on his/her own and they could clap and wiggle around to the songs. The flashing lights on the belly are very intriguing as well… For my 30month old daughter it is very educational. It teaches colors, the alphabet, and the freeze dance song is a great energy burner and a great tool to teach them that freeze means stop and they have to wait for the next cue. I will certainly buy this for all of my friends’ kids. It was especially helpful when I was trying to make dinner and Hallie wanted to be held and was under my feet, she picked up Little Guy and worked up a sweat dancing. I LOVE it!”

Kidkraft Red Vintage Kitchen $125.84 $86.62 (12 mos – 6 years)

I know what you’re thinking – a one year old is too little to enjoy a big dramatic play toy like this. Once upon a time, I would have agreed with you – but then my baby boy starting pulling up and I got to see first hand how much he LOVES opening and shutting the doors, turning the knobs, taking the sink in and out and putting food in and out of all the compartments.

Plus, I know he has years of enjoying it still ahead of him. The ideal time to buy this toy is around 18 months so your child gets the maximum amount of years out of it.

We initially bought this for the big kids several years ago when they were 1 and 3 and couldn’t be happier with it as it still gets lots of play at ages 6 and 8.  I really like the look of the thing and I think the vibrant red is nicely gender neutral. Despite a small footprint, this kitchen still has all the amenities and both my kids enjoy regularly playing at it simultaneously.

(Side note: people sometimes ask if kids will get too big for this smaller kitchen – mine are 95th percentile in height and haven’t had an issue). If you’re looking for a big wow gift from Santa (or parents or grandparents) this could very well be it!

Educational Insights Magic Moves Talking Electronic Wand $13.10 $11.91 (18 months – 9 years)

Normally I’m not big on electronic toys with lots of sounds and lights, but when said toy can help my kids get rid of all their pent up energy inside on a stormy day, it becomes my new best friend. This inexpensive magical wand uses 90 silly commands (sway, creep, stomp like a dinosaur, leap) and 26 songs, along with a light show to get kids moving. This is one of those rare toys that’s great for siblings of different ages to play together (my 7-year-old, 5-year-old, and 18 month old all love it).

It will keep the bigger kids interested (who doesn’t like having the mic and being the star of the show?) while developing listening skills in the younger set along with enriching their vocabulary and ability to follow directions.

Note: If animals aren’t your kids thing, there’s now also this gym version.

Fisher-Price Bubble Mower $20.99 $11.74

This toy is great for taking dramatic play outdoors and, honestly, it’s totally worth getting just for the adorable pictures you’ll get of the kids following around Dad (or Mom) while they mow the lawn.

Seriously, this toy is a real winner – it has realistic lawnmower soundsl and blows real bubbles. It will ignite the kids’ imagination and get them moving at the same time.

screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-2-29-34-pm

Dirt Devil Junior Lights Sounds Upright Toy Vacuum $24.97 $17.66 (walking – 7 years)

I had to include this toy vacuum because it was the absolute favorite of my son AND literally every other kid in his toddler group when he was 2 to 3 years old. The class had 3 of them and there were still daily tussles over them between the kids… and that’s without even being allowed to have the batteries in them.

(In fact, if you’re not a fan of toys that make sounds I’d suggest just never putting the batteries in – this will still be a fantastic pretend play toy). This Disney Minnie Bowtique Vacuum is also really cute and gets great reviews if you’re looking for something a little more, what’s the word, pink!

Magformers 30 Piece Set $39.99 $29.99Magformers Cruisers Car Set $46.22 $38.99 (3+ years)

A friend from toddler group recommended these to me when I mentioned what a big fan we are of magna-tiles. They work in the same way but they are more affordable and can be used to make 3D geometric shapes. The reviews are also similarly stellar (as long as you buy sets with enough pieces may say).

The cruiser car sets allow builders to create cars of various design, including classic cars, wacky cars, space cars, underwater cars, dragsters, and hot rods.

Shopkins Happy Places House Playset $29.99 $23.99 (4 – 9 years)

Shopkins has a new dollhouse out that, although it doesn’t look like much, is sure to please any Shopkins lover you have at home. It’s a great place for your child to play with all those Shopkins they’ve been collecting- arranging and re-arranging them to their heart’s content.

One reviewer wrote, “Heavy duty playhouse for Shopkins. My daughter received this for her birthday along with the individual room sets (bought separately) and she loves redecorating each room. Good quality. If your little one loves Shopkins this is a great addition for them.

#13 Lil Lockitz up to 60% off (5 – 12 years) – on Lightning Deal so get ’em before they run out!

My 6-year-old daughter loves, loves making rainbow looms for her friends and trading them with her friends. So, I’ve been looking around to see if there were any other jewelry-making kits that would equally capture her interest. I think Lil Lockitz is definitely it.

Last month my husband purchased this rubber band refill set and she absolutely loved the charms that came with it… The Lil Lockitz sets are all about charms. The sets supply kids with gems, backgrounds and charms to fill and personalize each locket. Kids love the ability to customize the locket to fit their personality and if boys aren’t into the necklaces, there are bracelets and keychains to be made too.

Plus they’re large and easy to manipulate. And, like any good toy, there are a million different themed sets available. This Christmas I’m leaning towards starting my daughter off with the Best Friend Party Pack, which comes with a photo puncher to use your own photos in the lockets.

#16 DC Super Hero Girls Collection up to 40% off (5 – 10 years)

Speaking of dolls that send the right message to our girls, I’m loving the new line of DC Super Hero Girls. Not only do they have a very fun look, they also send a great message of empowerment.

I also really appreciate the articulating limbs so kids (both girls and boys!) can use them for acting out all sorts of super hero moves. You can buy the larger 12″ dolls individually or go in for the 6″ versions in a three pack or six pack.

Tons of Nerf Guns On Sale – See them ALL here!

I have to say, during my first few years as a parent, I really wouldn’t have imagined putting any type of projectile toy on one of my gift guides… But then I suddenly had a 6-year-old boy and my tune (probably predictably) changed. Of course, I still recommend supervision with these types of toys but I’ve seen first hand how fun they can be – especially, in our case, when used with DIY cardboard targets set up outside or in the garage on rainy days.

The ability to customize this one with interchangeable accessories makes it sure to impress under the tree come Christmas!

Exploding Kittens Card Game $24.99 $16.99

Have you heard of this Uber popular game yet?! This hilarious card game made Kickstarter history by becoming it’s most backed project ever. Kids and adults alike cannot get enough of the bizarro premise of a kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette.

To play, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game – unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens. Check it out, you’ve gotta see it to understand… and then your whole family will be hooked!

HedBanz Electronic $16.99 $7.99 (6+ years) $19.99 $11.67

This super popular and very highly rated game is basically the classic “Who am I” game with fun headbands that kids will get a kick out of wearing. Kids will flex their deductive reasoning skills with the game’s simple question-and-answer premise. By making connections and coming up with questions that will lead to answers, they will also practice critical thinking skills. This new electronic version has an all-new ‘electronic host’ who not only runs the game, but also keeps score so you don’t have to!

Bounce-Off $12.72 $6.99 (7+ years)

This active game is one that will truly appeal to players spanning a range of ages. Kind of a version of beer pong for kids (stay with me here, we’re not straying from family-friendly – I promise), it’s simple for everyone to understand and play and doesn’t take long to turn into an exciting game of fierce collaboration or hearty competition.

One reviewer wrote, “We took advantage of picking this one up for our boys ages 8, 9 and 11… The first day they opened this and started playing, there was nothing but laughter and enjoyment for more than two hours for all three who sat down to play. They all got along (often a problem in competitive board games) and despite the fact that they didn’t bother to keep score, they really liked it… without parental supervision or interaction, they played peacefully and contently for a long time. And they had no problems going back to the game either… Not sure how educational it is, but it works on hand-eye coordination and I’d say it’s one of the better team-building games that we own.”

Pie Face Game $14.88 (2 – 12 years)

This super fun game has been a huge hit ever since it debuted. We got ours last month for my son’s 8th birthday and had the best time playing with it. Everyone from my 2-year-old son to the grandparents was rolling on the ground laughing.

The premise couldn’t be more simple; spin a number, put your face in the holder, crank the number of times that you spun and see if you get a “pie face”. Because kids love getting dirty and silly, this one is always a winner.

Richard Scary Busy Town Game $19.99 $14.99 (3 – 8 years)

I have heard great things about this cooperative, non-competitive game from multiple sources but was really convinced when a mom on one of my son’s good friends was raving about it. Everything about this game is impressive, from the 6 foot long game board, to the amount of imagination and teamwork required.

In fact, the company behind this game, Wonder Forge, has won over 120 prestigious awards by creating good-for-you games that encourage teamwork, healthy competition, and get-up-and-go active play. This is the perfect game for children of multiple ages to play together and for when you hit that stage when kids pout a lot about losing or start to become ultra competitive as it focuses on teamwork instead of competition.
