Mom Hack: I May Never Buy Retail Again!

I know, never say never. But I’m not kidding, I found a new way to shop that is not only SO MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE than shopping in stores, but also makes me feel a lot better as a citizen of the world.

The site/app I’m talking about is called Poshmark and it takes consignment shopping to a whole new level.

Psst- If you want to try it, use my code “MPMK” for a free $5 credit.

UPDATE: I’ve also just dipped my toys into becoming a seller, so check out my closet too!

So what makes Poshmark so great? A couple things…

#1 – Most of the Items are New with Tags or in Like New Condition

Just spend a few minutes on the app and you’ll be super impressed by the quality of the clothes, many of which are brand new. It’s such a great opportunity to get brands like Anthropologie, Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew, Free People and tons more.

And all at deeply discounted prices.

#2 – Haggling Is Not Only Encouraged, It’s Expected

Every seller openly advertises, “Don’t like the price, make me an offer!”

And it’s super easy to do, just like an item and then click on the button “make an offer” and wait. Not only is it ridiculously gratifying when your discounted offer is accepted, it really works.

#3 – The Secret Sauce Is “Bundling”

Like just about everything these days, Poshmark is a social network. Sellers have profiles and it is super easy to communicate with them.

This is handy in itself when making an offer and negotiating… but the magic really happens when you find two or more items you’re excited about from the same seller.

I’ve found that the more items you bundle together, the more you can save.

As an example, check out this deal I made last night…

First I bundled together these items:

7 For All Mankind Jeans

Retail value: $200… Listed price: $19

NWT (New with Tags) Printed Tassel Shorts

Retail value: $28… Listed price: $8

Banana Republic Silk Tank

Retail value: $48… Listed price: $18

Graphic Tank Bundle

Retail value: $48… Listed price: $12

Abercrombie & Fitch Shorts

Retail value: $48… List price: $8

So, to recap, this bundle was for 7 items valued at $372 and priced at $65, which is already a savings of 82%.

One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is that once you make a bundle, the seller will very often contact you with a private offer before you even have to reach out to them.

In this case, the buyer initiated negotiations by offering her $65 bundle for $45 + free shipping… a pretty amazing deal for $372 worth of clothes!

But I was in a haggling mood, so I countered with $35… she came back with $42… I countered again at $39 and that’s where we struck a deal.

In Summary

I paid $6.49 for shipping but – bonus – there’s no tax! The entire transaction took less than 10 minutes and, in the end I ended up with, drumroll please..

$372 worth of clothing for a grand total of $45.49! That’s an amazing 88% off retail price!

I walked away feeling awesome not only about the huge amount of money I saved, but also about not adding to the many problems that come along with buying today’s fast fashion from stores like H&M.

(If you don’t know what I’m talked about, check out the documentary The True Cost- you’ll never look at shopping the same!)

Plus, it was a win for the seller too who got some clutter out of her house and some quick cash.

I truly hope you guys give Poshmark a try. I’m telling you, you’re gonna love it!
