Did you know that cake decorators sometimes use rice krispie treats to mold under fondant for things like, say a giant cowboy hat?
It’s true! The rice krispie treat recipe can be used as a type of playdough. Once it has slightly cooled, you can mold it into any shape you like.
In honor of the upcoming holiday, we decided to make up a batch and shape them into Valentine hearts.
You can stop there, or you can really take it up a notch by dipping them in white chocolate and adding red sprinkles. Why wouldn’t you?
We used a traditional rice krispie treat recipe as follows:
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 4 cups mini marshmallows
- 6 cups rice krispie cereal (or any puffed rice cereal)
Directions
Melt the butter on low and add in the marshmallows. Stir until melted.
Add the cereal and stir until well coated.
And here’s where things go a little differently than normal. Spray a 9×13 pan with cooking spray and dump your mixture inside.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place nearby.
Work quickly to create small loosely shaped balls with your hands. Ours were about 3″ across.
Use your hand to gently press down to flatten the ball into a circle.
Use your pointer finger to create an indent in the top middle section.
With your pincher fingers, start shaping the bottom into a point to complete the heart shape.
Once you’ve shaped all the hearts, you can decorate them. We chose white chocolate chips to melt in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until completely smooth.
Some of the hearts were dipped and sprinkled. Others were simply drizzled.
Have fun with it and definitely let the kids dive in and get their hands messy too!
